To be fair those statements you cite were distortions from the original understanding and text. Much of the original teachings were highly metaphorical/allegorical in nature. It had to be, taking into account cultural context and events transpired since.

Oh so many lies, but the worst, I think, is “my way or the highway.” Years ago, watching TV, a young man was screaming at me, and pointing at me, and shouting that if I “didn’t believe exactly as he did, I would go to hell.” I blessed and forgave him, and changed the channel.
Religious arrogance and religious hatred are the worst of the lies.

That sounds like the church I used to go to for over 10 years. They thought they had a special view on the bible that no other church had. That other churches were missing out.
