Bojack Horseman Season 3 - Plenum - 07-29-2016

This latest season got released on Netflix last week sometime.  I watched all 12 episodes in about 4 different sessions, and it was quite an emotional rollercoaster.

It's very sombre, in tone, compared to the first 2 seasons.

Bojack always had a self-destructive tendency, but it's really played up as a theme in this Season.

The storytelling is also surprisingly innovative; and a few episodes leave you going - wow - that is really funky.

But as a catalyst, a lot of the darker emotions - repeated failure, friendships devalued, pain and glamor, loss - really get nailed in.

That said, it has it's hilarious moments too, after all, it is ostensibly a comedy, but the depth of feeling and authenticity is really true.  It also leaves me in some awe at the voice acting, and the large cameo cast that is utilized.

I more or less enjoyed the first two seasons, although the truth is, I'm getting a bit tired of the focus on Bojack's self-destruction. I feel like the show is bordering on getting very one-note because of that. At this point, I'm far more invested in all the various side stories -like Diane\Peanutbutter's relationship or Princess Carolyn's struggles towards self actualization- rather than anything Bojack is doing, specifically because he's become so predictable.

But I'm sure I'll get around to watching it sooner or later. For that matter, I still haven't watched the new OITNB season. (I've been binging on classic Star Trek lately for some reason, haha.)

aw man i need to catch up now, i watched season 1 and 2. i like the characters self reflection that tends to... ebb and flow throughout the show.

Really great show. It's really unique. It's really interesting how they simultaneously don't make a big deal of the amorphized animals yet their difference does have an impact on the writing of the show. It's crazy how 'human' the main character is, yet he's a horse.

PS: The underwater episode in season 3 really broke up the monotony of the train wreck of Bojack's life.

Wow. So I'm midway through Season 3, and I just watched that episode. Holy sh*t. South Park may actually -finally- have a rival for managing to handle highly controversial topics by making them so mind-bogglingly outrageous that somehow the moderate viewpoint they're advancing ends up shining through the shenanigans. Plus, it was more character focused than SP usually is too.

But I still really don't care what happens to Bojack. This just reinforces my theory that Bojack Horseman is best with only small doses of Bojack Horseman. Wink

(Heh, and speaking of OITNB, that's the key to watching it. Realizing that over time Piper will become less and less important to the story, and the show will only improve because all the OTHER plotlines are so much stronger. By Season 3, she's truly "main character" in name only.)
