So true thoughtlessness isn't possible? It would be like having no awareness.

How I would describe "no thought" would be: attention has no shape. Imagine water being poured into different types of glasses. It takes on and conforms to whatever shape it is poured into. Similarly consciousness assumes whatever shape it is poured into, but it doesn't have to be poured into a shape. You can allow it to be its natural, intangible, ineffable, and pure state of beingness -- awareness of awareness. A pure state of witnessing. No awareness is more accurately described in my opinion as: not collecting consciously retrievable memories. For example: someone is knocked out, they are aware, but they don't collect memories so they assume awareness wasn't present when they 'wake up'. Often during states of so called "unconsciousness" we are aware, we just aren't thinking, or remembering, so it feels like a gap in existence or beingness, but this isn't actually the case which one can prove to themselves after a number of years of meditation. You eventually gain the capacity to hold onto or otherwise retrieve subtler or fainter memories such as those created when the physical body's brain activity is significantly reduced, and then you start to get a sense of the fact that we never cease being aware.
