I just want to say I think you are doing it right but often in meditation what we must most face is that doubt of whether or not anything is even happening. Let your fears appearing be a sign that there is something occurring and that there is an opportunity for you to make use of that experience. Remember, the mind, the soul, is complete and whole, it contains all opposites and so wherever you encounter fear, find the adjacent feeling which is its complete opposite. I actually believe whatever the opposite is will be somewhat unique for each individual as I don't believe there are objective "sets" per se because we use words to describe what we feel and so two people might use different words to describe the same feeling, so it is best to ask yourself what you fear is, and what its opposite would be/feel like. Just food for thought for use.
