this is a story i heard on a cd. thomas ashley farrand, who was a master of sanskrit mantra, had a family member who was very sick. he and his wife did an intense course of chanting for that member. the person died despite their efforts. he didnt understand and went into meditation to comprehend why. the answer he got was this - hmm , so U think u are in control of everything do u, and then this came to him. even though what he and his wife did could not stop the passing of this family member their chanting totally changed the next life that person was to experience, and changed it for the better. so bottom line things dont always turn out the way we want them to, but nothing ever done in the spirit of love is ever wasted in this life.
one other thing, i was talking to my daughter in law yesterday. she spent a long weekend as a chaperon for young people in her church as they went on a retreat with 9 other churches. she is from el salvador. at one point in the services the young people were encouraged to come forward if they felt estranged from one of their parents . she said about half of the kids came forward. one little girl said she comes home every day after school locks herself in her room and cries and cries. one problem many immigrant children have is that they have been seperated from their parents for years, often from a very young age and they dont have that support u would hope for when u are an adolescent. one of the hardest things to do is to go live in another country and abandon your family and your support system. it is tough tough tough. many of these children need need need someone to talk to to unburden themselves, someone who will be non judgemental and sympathetic. the spark of divinity lives in each one of us. i choose to see the good in people. i am not one to throw people away because they have some problems . who of us has not had some problems. but for the grace of god i could have spent time in jail and i am not a bad dude but i am so to speak, mischievous and dont like rules and regs to say the least lol. so when i see a young person having problems i dont want to throw them away and lock them up , i want to find a way to connect with them and give them hope for the future for many many many young people now adays feel hopeless and see no way out of their situation. bottom line one of the most powerful things we can do imho is to truly listen to another and to get them to open their hearts and unburden themselves. the heart is a beautiful flower and at its center lies a precious gift the gift of self. if we can cultivate that in another we truly are doing gods work in my world anyway
