Honestly, that phrase is a control tactic. It automatically elicits guilt, which causes an unconscious response to be better by being submissive.
The true saying is "do unto others as they want you to do unto them". Every successful salesperson knows this. Every successful salesperson also knows that selling themselves is paramount. Who are the most successful people if not the ones that sell themselves the best? And where can we find them? In Hollywood and Washington. Actors and Politicians. If you want to succeed, cause others to perceive you highly.
