I believe he also said the wisdom is superior to martyrdom, although I would have to go back and do some reading to find out for sure if I'm remembering these bits correctly.

I think the idea is that wisdom provides the consciousness to make love more efficacious. It is interesting and ironic that just as it is lack of acceptance which prevents love from being available to entities, so it is with wisdom.
