I agree with this but would rearrange it a bit:
Vegetarianism benefits everyone, most notably the direct victims (the animals). Benefits to self are bonus.
I concur. But the benefits to oneself are not insignificant. To reach enlightenment by dint of hard work, discipline and dedication is the fruit of many, many lifetimes, and some would say is the primary purpose of human life. But we're quibbling here; the benefits are manifold for all involved and redound wholly to the Good.
