I would add that, in the metaphorical sense, every major leap forward in my spiritual growth has involved a mental "ninety degree turn" in that it came with the sudden realization that something I thought I knew was almost entirely wrong.

That sounds almost like a 180.

90 could be looked at as "branching".

My view is that continuous 90 in same direction is spiral.

Not a total turn around in belief... but more as if my previous thought was only tangentially true relative to the new understanding.
