If you decide that it is not your choice, and that your belief system no longer represents what you really want to believe (i.e. realizing that nothing can actually "hurt" you), then it will be solved.
Of course, it is not always that simple, and once someone goes crazy over hearing voices or having horrible experiences, outside helps and defenses might help.
I always wonder though, when seeing theese tv shows based on the paranormal (like the "The River", currently airing), is that it is so funny that there will be a spanish girl on the boat who does not speak english but can hastily talk about (in spanish) how all the ghosts out there are wanting to kill them -but there, for some reason, is NEVER a smiling buddhist monk who just sits there chilling out, telling people that it is going to be alright
