I believe it would be seeing one's self as an individual, with certain aspects, traits, or perceived personality. It is associated with the mind, and thinking. It is a part of self, but not the whole self; and identity would also be transitory as it is part of physical existence and attached to a body.
Identity can also be formed from various unsuitable sources such as playing a role in a dysfunctional family as a child, and continuing to blindly play out that role as an adult. To function in a physical body as an individual, identity can be useful, but it would be best put in perspective as a small part of self, and also cleared of any aspects not serving the higher self, or spirit.
