Hold on the horses here! Some definition of terms are needed, it seems.
Empathy has nothing to do with the five senses. Consequently, smelling odors, hearing noise, tasting food, seeing images and colors through eyesight as well as sensing touch through skin do not belong to empathy but are perceptions of the five senses.
Briefly put, empathy is the ability of perceiving and receiving data and information NOT through the five senses but instead through the energetic electrical body or soul. This occurs 1/ at the individual level and also 2/ at the Earth level (through the energetic electrical body of Earth/Gaia herself and all her inhabitants and life forms. This allows silent and distant communication not only with other human beings but also with animals, trees and plants, crystals and rocks, the elements, etc. We could talk of ‘empathosphere’ to describe the medium through which empaths communicate.
We may add to this also the DNA resonance factor.

More and more are now coming to the realization that we, on planet Earth, are breathing, sharing and recycling the same air and that we have done so for billions of years. I‘ve heard the term of ‘second hand smoking’, well, this is ‘second hand breathing’, imo! And humans are not the only breathers on the planet!
Since the air is made of an average of 70% water and, Masaru Emoto's work has confirmed that water is a vehicle of thoughts and emotions, we may come to the conclusion that the mere fact of breathing is an act of creation of every instant. It is also an act of empathy and, is such at least for those who have the receptors in place 1/ for receiving and 2/ for interpreting the data received through air, light and electromagnetic energy, as well as DNA resonance.
Every instance of the whole history of this planet, everywhere, on the ground, under the ground and in the air, rivers and seas, every single life is breathing out their thoughts and emotions before breathing in other's thoughts and emotions in a constant exchange of energies and data.
It is not a surprise then that the data and energies are in constant circulation and that people are starting perceiving them. Perception will become clearer and clearer as well as more frequent as we move toward Ascension and realize our unity in our diversities.
