Well if his current belief system does not make him happy, then maybe it is time to move on and try something new?

Indeed. When one thinks repeating thought (and hence forms crystallised neurological pathways), it's harder to break from said patterns without huge catalyst.
I am of the notion that this depression IS the catalyst, and as much as I want to spend some time with him and explain TLOO and spiritual principles, his free will must be honoured. When he's ready, I'll be there for him :¬)
