Hmm, which is worse, sane and uncomfortably awake, or insane and comfortably numb and asleep.
An actual first-hand spiritual experience will give the person the faith they need to support that belief in most cases, I think.
The problem is that that's a high price of devotion to ask for most people who live with those sorts of beliefs.
