In 4D, we won't wear clothing based on cultures or fashions that are not our own. In 4D, we will not work meaningless jobs, we will not need to buy more useless consumer goods, and we will not experience the feelings that these things bring with them (entrapment).

No, you are not looking too deeply, you've figured it out just right. (BTW I used to work in marketing as well, and had exactly the same feeling you described).
