I wonder if anyone will ever understand music well enough to create an algorithm that produces music.

That's already been done.

emily is a computer program.

Very interesting. It produces pleasing melodies, and the choice of piano sound makes it sound easier on the ears. However, to my ear it sounds like rule-based synthesis from a few classical compositions. Sounds very generally like a Mozart allegro sonata without the improvisational range.
