I wrote about the need to decentralize our power grid to defend against things like this instead of relying on a few single large oil wells and distant powerplants, I made a point of pointing out how weak our powergrid is against an invasion or some natural disaster acting like a hostile force and deliberately targetting a few key points, if we had a greater supply of wind and other renevables we could much more easily rebuild after such a catastrophy. Either way, if something like the X56 solar flare strikes us we'll lose powergrid and most connected utilieties all the way down south to mexico, probably the entire planet, up in the north here you occasionaly get failed power transmitters due to aurora borealis so I know that if a big one strikes theres no protection.
