The name was evidently chosen by the tongue-in-cheeky author of this provocative fictional work to mimetically resonate subliminally with that of the unfortunate young Kentucky Air National Guard pilot, Captain Thomas F. Mantell, who in 1948 died whilst in hot aerial pursuit of what he perceived to be a UFO --

Obviously this young vet, an WWII Army Air Force officer decorated for heroism in action, was an incompetent aviator, and an irresponsibly unrealistic and wholly unreliable witness regarding things aerial.

Mantell was a flight instructor at the very airfield where an also-young Don Elkins was learning to fly, taking first steps skyward to eventually becoming a professional airline pilot -- who in his off-hours just happened to be keen on learnedly investigating UFO sightings) . . .
