I don't think in terms of Occult or not. Everything is a vibrational expression of Creator, of Logos and the energies of everyone. I've worked with mandalas, as keys that fit a certain vibrational pattern that is interdimensional in nature.
Yeah, learning to trust the dowsing is an important first step. I'd recommend smudging with white sage first to clear negative energy, that can include doubts. Use protection of visualizing a white bubble of light, or however you use protection for this.
