I gave up the whole lotus position years ago. I too had the same issues of not only my feet going to sleep but my butt also lol. Plus the whole straight back position caused my muscles to spasm within about a minute such a flexed back position.
I have a nice leather recliner that is awesome to meditate in but now that my girlfriend and I meditate together, we sit on the floor. The only way I have figured out how is to sit on a couple pillows and sit back again the foot of the recliner. That way my legs don't go numb and my back is supported.
