Although probably not in the magnitude that you describe, I think I can say I've had similar experiences. I'll be on my merry way when suddenly, it will hit me that something I've done or said was actually very self-serving or coming from a base of very little self-awareness. And of course, it didn't seem that way to me while the situation was unfolding.
It's surprising and shocking, but it can also be humbling. This life experience allows you to show yourself to yourself in such a unique way. You're now viewing the situation from a different angle. You can see the cause and effect clearly now, and understand why you did or said such and such. The sides of yourself that you've seen are the sides that you're trying to come to meet during this life experience. It shouldn't be a disheartening thing to have a lot of work to do! We're all in that position!
