when my grandfather passed about 14 years ago, I was still carrying around some residual anger due to the physical punishments he inflicted on me and all the other kids/cousins in our wider family.
I remember actually being a little upset at my sister at the funeral because she actually showed some emotion and was crying. Talk about me hanging onto the past, and not offering forgiveness!
but yeah, the guy had a difficult life, and a lot of the physical chastisements were part of that age and times (it wasn't even questioned), and the attitude was 'spare the rod, spoil the child'.
