If you have some money to invest pick up a British Berkefeld or a Berkey Filter. Both housings are pretty much the same though there are some discrepancies with the appraised Black Candles the Berkey Filter uses, so avoid those.
I'd go for the Berkefeld, and stick with the Super Sterasyl ceramic candles. Those things are awesome and the water tastes fantastic. I wouldn't recommend any home made jobs in terms of simply using porous materials though, so I'm not sure what budget solutions there might be other than to use the filter elements the Berkefeld uses and make your own housing which I've seen others do.
