When I was eight years old, friends in the neighborhood were playing kickball in the street. That meant that we would have to pause when a car wanted to go by. One kid noticed a "thing" in the sky that seemed not to be moving. We all looked at it for a few minutes, then went back to playing. We would check on it every once-in-a-while, and it stayed there until we went home to supper, so at least an hour.
One of the two Louisville TV stations had a film camera, and the operator pointed it at the spot, then later found a telescope and put the camera on it. The spot looked bigger, but still with no detail. On the 5:30 news, they quoted the Weather Bureau as saying it had released no balloon that day.
On the 10:30 news, they quoted the Air Force as saying it was just a weather balloon, and that was that.
