Meditation 'techniques' are (mainly) manipulation of brain activity once one has reached the 'meditative' state. In the silence which is potential for sound/distortion many helpful distortions/work can be produced but I find the 'traditional' way the most effective as it is 'true' meditation, connecting to the fundamental vibration that is silence. As for what I think about there have been times when I have been relayed messages (or unconsciously produced such thought) but I try to keep my mind free. Though I have found it's helpful to not consciously banish thought because you can get stuck in the loop of wondering if all thought is gone yet lolol, to simply let it fall away.
