something ive found common to many teachers of meditation is they recommend starting with your attention in the body and the breath. the mind isnt always present as it will constantly try to draw your conscious into the past or future, but the body is always present. by putting our awareness into our breath or specific areas of the body for 5-10 minutes, it is much easier to get the internal dialogue to shut off and into a passive meditative state.
