I would recommend googling around for NLP techniques. This one isn't the one I was looking for, but it seems effective just the same. The one I was looking for would literally encourage the opposite of the ingrained response to a stimuli. So, something that used to break your spirit would instead cause you to be filled with energy and motivation. Simple, but powerful stuff.
