The Sons of Levi

I am not very familiar with the inner intricacies of the Bible, but could someone explain to me a bit more about the Sons of Levi. Ra mentions them as "an elite".

This Ark was designed to constitute the place wherefrom the priests, as you call those distorted towards the desire to serve their brothers, could draw their power and feel the presence of the One Creator. However, it is to be noted that this entire arrangement was designed, not by the one known to the Confederation as Yahweh, but rather was designed by negative entities preferring this method of creating an elite called the Sons of Levi.

I was reminded of this because I've been listening to some of Handel's Messiah, more specifically, the 'He Shall Purify' track.

"And He shall purify the sons of Levi, that they may offer unto the Lord an Offering in righteousness. (Malachi 3:3)"

Jacob is considered the patriarch of the Israelites and his 12 sons were the heads of the 12 tribes of Israel. One of his sons was Levi and the descendants of Levi, or the Levites, are the ones Ra is referring to here.

Members of the Tribe of Levi had greater rights than members of the other tribes, and the ancient priestly caste of Israel, the Kohenim, were all drawn from the Levites. The other tribes payed tithe to the Kohenim and even the lay Levites had important ritual roles in the temple and were in charge of cities. Moses was a member of the Tribe of Levi as well.
