Sage burning to cleanse an area and alternatives?

Hey Guys

Does anyone know the metaphysics behind sage smoke clearing out negative energy? How does it do this? How often should you purify an area?

Also, are there any alternatives, such as marijuana ?

My teacher and I put up bags with crystals, lavendar and other stuff in the 4 corners of the house and imagined a wall between them.
It forms a barrier that keeps out negative beings from the home. I still will cleanse with sage from time to time for negative energies.
I just know that negative beings don't like sage. It repels negative energy and leaves a neutral energy behind.

I would purify whenever it gets heavy or too dark feeling.

My teacher said to keep a outside door open when doing it. Though you could do a window too I imagine.

Holy Water is also of high vibration.

Slice it in thin slices and place it around the place, and let it smell.

Or, the nuclear option of burning it, as Ra described.
