My take on it is that what's being removed is one's resistance or attachment or some other sort of personal involvement. The "core," I expect, is not the ego traits. These, as I understand it, become progressively more transparent until....they.......dis........app.....e...a..... --for all intents & purposes.
What's paradoxical about it, is that as ego falls away, nothing is lost. In fact, there's so much more. More opportunities, more enjoyment, more love, more light, more friendship, more fun. You could live the rest of your life in an egoless state and you wouldn't lose a thing from any viewpoint except the ego's.
Ego here meaning I want, I need, I did this and that, I'm this or that. Not meaning the harmless and unassuming sense of I.
