We had a beautiful evening here last night (September 17th). The sky was very clear, humidity low, and the temperature mild....so we sat out on the deck to watch the stars after sunset. Since the sky was so clear, I began to crave a visit from my friends "up there"....so mentally I called for them to appear.
The night got darker and all of the major constellations were clearly visible. I looked up and noticed a bright light, obviously very high up (probably beyond the atmosphere), and clearly moving very fast. It was on a due northward trajectory, so naturally, I assumed it was a satellite in polar orbit, and pointed it out to my wife. We watched it pass just to the east of Cygnus.
As it continued, it veered northeastward, heading toward Cassiopeia. "Wait a minute!" I said. "It's turned northeastward, so it can't be a satellite!". It passed through Cassiopeia and then came to a dead stop. After being still for about 20 seconds, it made a brief dogleg to the east, then turned northeastward again, and moved off toward the horizon, eventually going out of sight.
Then, less than 10 minutes later, we saw another similar object, which traveled across the sky on almost exactly the same course!
The are listening to us.
