*Potential* Benefits of Probiotics - reeay - 12-09-2013

Probiotics seem to help relieve symptoms of autism and depression in rats (not really studied in humans via clinical trials as of yet). What's up with gut bacteria? It does suggest that our diet is linked here, too, with mental illness symptomology.

My sister has diverticulitis and she swears she hasn't had an attack since, and as long as she continues with, taking probiotics.

I take one daily as a prophylactic. I've been really concentrating on my health this year with an holistic approach - mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness. I think of probiotics as part of my physical baseline.

I find it interesting that so many recent studies have focused on gut bacteria and human health. I think that it is an interesting mirror for the state of our society's processed food culture.

Added to our own love of antibiotics in everything from soap to cosmetics, all of the milk and meat that people eat on a daily basis is loaded with antibiotics, unless the consumer actively avoids it. Much of our produce is genetically modified to be a biocide, and then is sprayed heavily with more biocides, then processed with chemicals, etc etc. It's no surprise that the modern diet has had an impact on the ecosystem we carry in our stomachs and the living organisms that reside there upon which we are dependent.

Probiotics are designed to supplement what isn't there but would be if one were to eat a diet rich in clean food/vegetables. My guess is that it has become a buzzword because it is a pharmaceutical that can be prescribed instead of rooting the true cause and reversal of the issue, a change in diet. I presume though it is probably often difficult to get someone who is mentally ill/impaired to completely change their diet without behavioral/intestinal issues, especially when addiction gets factored into the issue.

I think a deliberate change in one's diet can be a sweeping gesture in a direction of healing and being more loving and thoughtful towards the self. I also think it never hurts to send love and light to all of the organisms that inhabit our vehicle, as they do outnumber our own cell count.

Well said, Jade.

My wife have been taking probiotics and it's been really good for her. She used to eat yogurt for the probiotics but now has cut it out and is feeling much better.

Since I've been eating lot of whole, organic and much raw food I haven't even needed any extra probiotics.

Yes I am in total agreement, to be able to take these things from our natural food source is paramount. I prefer to do so bc I can't be bothered to take pills. And if getting pills is the way to go, psychobiotics *may* offer safer option compared to psychotropics that are currently used to treat people.

I would also bring up that the act of taking 'something' may have a positive impact for some bc that capsule/pill is representative of one's potential well-being. Partially placebo effect. Pill-->helps me-->take pill-->i feel better. Oversimplification but it happens. Even the act of getting prescribed pills and having it close helped some of my clients (they didn't took them).

Also, not to defend taking of supplements/pills, but when you're in the lower socioeconomic situation (below the poverty line) or living in 3rd world countries, the access/availability to such foods is a challenge. We can teach healthy choices but there are lots of constraints in getting ingredients & preparing foods. It could be more possible via getting something like psychobiotics with their socialized health care plans.

It would be a worthwhile study to understand why such foodstuff is not consumed. I know working with people way way below the poverty line that consuming hot pockets and spam was most feasible than consuming alternative, healthy stuffs. We tried many ways to help folks make alternative choice (gardening, education), but it comes down to the specific situation of the person and what they view is possible. It's a challenge.

Conditioning. The processed foods also seem to be made around addictive and numbing properties.

I remember as a teenager driving through an unfamiliar town in Oregon, looking for something like a Taco Bell. We rounded a bend and saw a Taco Time sign and everyone in the car was happy to have found something. Well when we drove in front of the place there were no windows and no drive through, and we saw the letters 'laboratory' under Taco Time. None of us had any clue what that meant, and just chalked it up to another weird road trip experience. Interesting to think they need labs to better formulate what to feed you at a nominal price.

The other day we drove by a store and noticed a sign with DORITOS $2.29 and my wife mentioned how they used to be $2.99 back in the 1980s.

I'm just curious, but are we talking pill form probiotics?

Intestinal flora seems to have a great effect on many things including depression.
