2,000 Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered, Contains Natural Medicines - BrownEye - 01-15-2013 Quote:Once upon a time, people used plants for healing and it wasn’t referred to as “alternative”. Back then, “traditional” medicine referred to that which had been around the longest, which was healing based on the use of plants and nature. Now, things have changed and we occasionally need a reminder that nature has been providing medicine for millennia and can still be trusted to provide it today. One of those reminders came just a couple years ago when archaeologists discovered a wooden box full of medicine in a 2,000 year-old sunken ship off the coast of Tuscany. RE: 2,000 Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered, Contains Natural Medicines - Cyan - 01-15-2013 I'd take a well stocked, supplied and maintained herbal / alternative health hospital over normal hospital for anything except surgery. I can only wonder what would happen if we'd get an alternative hospital with modern diagnostics equipment but medicine and health recommendations would be along alternative lines (exercise, diet, mind etc) RE: 2,000 Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered, Contains Natural Medicines - Spaced - 01-15-2013 (01-15-2013, 08:35 AM)Cyan Wrote: I'd take a well stocked, supplied and maintained herbal / alternative health hospital over normal hospital for anything except surgery. I honestly can't believe how little attention many doctors pay to the roles of attitude and diet in health. Attitude is not necessarily easy to assess, due to psychological factors involved. Effective dietary advice, beyond obvious generalities, would also require specialized assessment. RE: 2,000 Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered, Contains Natural Medicines - Richard - 01-16-2013 Nobody mentions that, natural medicines not withstanding, the average life expectancy of someone 2000 yrs ago was less than 30. We can make that "lifestyle" choice today. Knowing full well we have modern medicine to fall back on if natural remedies don't work. Which they don't always in cases of full blown sepsis, pneumonia or even something like flu. RE: 2,000 Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered, Contains Natural Medicines - Cyan - 01-16-2013 If you remove those who died of combat, childbirth or the first 2 years of life (things that could be prevented, first by not being a warlike species which isnt exactly here or there in terms of life expectency, second by basic maternal isntructions like how to properly give birth, and 3rd by not trying to kill the young of other males) the life epxectancy of well maintained stone age people would be 70-90 years. Bet on it. RE: 2,000 Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered, Contains Natural Medicines - Richard - 01-17-2013 But it didn't happen that way. So what is your point? The point is that "natural" medicines are fine for prevention, but they won't replace antibiotics if you are really ill. 70-90 is a bit of a stretch in any case. Even giving you your points, simply dealing with winter/summer cycle in a stone age society would carve years off your life expectancy. Couple that with wounds garnered accidentally in the never ending search for food...plant based or animal based?
