Considering the way that the price of beer has skyrocketed in the past year, I have difficulty believing that its price is being subsidized by the taxpayer.

"Two of the primary beer ingredients -- barley and sorghum -- are among the most heavily subsidized grains. According to the USDA, a little under half the barley crop, and 15 percent of the sorghum grown, go to making alcohol"

What's silly is that half of the barley crop and 15% of the sorghum crop are going to create something which robs your body of nutrients rather than nourishes it.

If we can't do it sustainably, which these subsidized crops are definitely not doing, then what's the point of even trying to provide for 7 billion people?

It is a difficult thing to struggle with. Feeding the hungry and relieving the suffering are STO actions in my eyes. But what happens when overall health of humans as well as our environment are sacrificed? Is it appropriate to take such risks to feed people? We know the system will inevitably fail and has already done considerable damage to major ecosystems.

We should not just give up on the prospect of other methods. There are sustainable systems for food production being developed for many climates. There are also easy-to-replicate aquaponic and hydroponic food production systems being researched and produced which can create massive amounts of healthy organic food with literally no environmental impact and with minimal external input. Wouldn't it make more sense for the government to invest in these sorts of technologies rather than food production which is harmful for both humans and the Earth?

If you follow the paper trail of how these government subsidies were started/built-up/sustained, where do you think it would lead? Back to special interest groups from the same industry receiving subsidies.

We aren't perfect. We never will be. You are contributing to a new way, I know.

Yeah we have wine in boxes, too. (mostly the homeless dudes drink it like that, easier to open, I guess Tongue )

RE: 9 Foods the Government is Paying for You to Eat - 3DMonkey - 11-03-2011

I think there must be a homeless commission to drink from the box. The homeless union has decided to think about the children; they are eliminated the dangers of broken glass. Maybe?

RE: 9 Foods the Government is Paying for You to Eat - Meerie - 11-03-2011

Yes you are probably right.
Pssst.... I sometimes drink beer from a can too. Sister Ankh has beer in lovely golden cans, from Finland

RE: 9 Foods the Government is Paying for You to Eat - Oceania - 11-03-2011

Why your gov. is paying for that kind of food ? Besides all the other manipulated foodproducts ? Hormones in milk, added 'bad' chemicals in food etc ? It's already very old news by now !

Danger Foods!! BEWARE!

why is modern health so bad? Well, as Pickle has posted this list, I'll expand with my thoughts based (for the most part) on bad personal experience.

Corn
used to make High Fructose Corn Syrup, a replacement for sugar in cola drinks. Links to diabetes and obesity explosions in past 2 decades.

Wheat
has a reputation for being the most UNTOLERATED food in human beings. Gluten Intolerance wreaks all manner of havoc to human health.

Soybeans
in Asian cultures, soy was fermented to destroy the inherent toxins in the soybean. Foods typically sold as 'soy products' today have not gone through this fermentation process, and hence contain some pretty nasty poisons. Vegetarians who use a lot of soy products for protein substitution start running into health issues pretty quick.

Rice
white hulled rice has quite a high glycemic index. I grew up on this stuff, and can attest to it's ability to give you 'carb coma' - ie, falling asleep after eating a meal of this stuff.

Beer
the fastest way to get a 'beer gut'? drink beer!! lol. Beer is incredibly fattening. Sumo Wrestlers consume ENORMOUS QUANTITIES of beer to get absolute huge and fat.

Milk
that watery liquid you buy in the supermarket. That ain't no milk. It's been boiled to all hell to make it last forever,

Beef
if you know of slaughterhouse practices, you will know that you are consuming a lot of s-hit (fecal matter) in your hamburger patty.

Peanut Butter
more allergies, more fat.

Sunflower Oil

hexane is used in most vegetable oil extraction. It is a toxin/poison. Generally, the modern vegetable oils cause immense havoc through rancid free radicals.

use instead:

cold pressed olive oil
organic coconut oil

animal fats (lard, beef drippings)

if you have ANY HEALTH ISSUES AT ALL, first place to look is your diet. Fixing your diet will solve many many of your problems.

many others on this forum will vouch for this.

blessings.

As far as I'm informed, it would be entirely possible to feed today's world population while fully relying on organic, fully sustainable farming methods. And I totally believe it (though it's a bit hard talking about these topics as an "armchair philosopher" basically...).

The problem of hunger and starvation in today's world largely seems to be one of (mis-)distribution and (mis-)allocation rather than a mere lack in the quantity of food.

Quote:"Every five seconds a child under ten dies of starvation. A child that dies of starvation is in effect murdered."
Jean Ziegler, former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food

If all the money that goes into research for agrochemicals and the like would instead go into research for sustainable "technology" of organic farming, I bet we would come up with lots of solutions for the problems agriculture is facing today rather quickly. In fact, there are tons of good ideas around, but neither is there a lobby nor enough funding to further develop and promulgate those ideas...

Yeah, and could someone tell me, please, why, when I post a picture, it will only show up as thumbnail and not in its original size? Thank you! Smile

I do remember a UN report saying that the population of the planet would easily be sustained if all farming methods were required to switch to organic. The mechanics of their concept was that there is a higher nutrient density in organic foods, thus not needing to eat as much to get the nutrients needed. So even with the standard folks complaining about organic harvests normally yielding less, that lesser amount is so much denser in nutrition that the tradeoff was well worth it. Another point was less land having to be used to grow the same amount of usable nutrients.
