Living the simple life - Eddie - 02-01-2011 Here a family in suburban southern California raises everything they eat on 1/5 acre; and has food and flowers left over to sell. I have about 1 1/2 acres....imagine what I could do. I already have a big garden, a blackberry patch, and 11 fruit trees, and I'm adding another large garden this year, and maybe a chicken coop. If I were further out in the country, I'd probably pen up a few hogs, or some hair sheep. I also can cut a surprising amount of firewood off my property; could probably sustain cuts of at least a cord per year. RE: Living the simple life - Ens Entium - 02-13-2011 This is awesome! There are plenty of chores that I detest, but I enjoy gardening and (especially) fruit culture. I've been raising fruit, off and on, for more than 30 years. I particularly like being able to secure a good supply of varieties that aren't available in grocery stores. The best fruits don't ship well. I'll be planting 4 more peach trees this spring; all varieties that aren't sold in stores. ![]() |
