How to get rid of addiction? - denise_chou - 04-21-2017

Hey!! I’m not so sure if this is the right place to ask but I desperately need answers. I'm taking ibuprofen daily in order to relieve from all the pain and headache. It helps me sleep calmly. I think I'm addicted to it. I don't get sleep when I'm not taking ibuprofen. What am I supposed to do? One of my friends suggested undergoing addiction counseling from a clinic in Vancouver [link removed by mod]. Will this be of any help? Is there a way to stop my addiction? Any tips are highly appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi Denise,
ibuprofen is not considered an addictive chemical and it is unlikely that you have developed any addiction to ibuprofen beyond a simple psychological habit. The only alternative to this would be if the ibuprofen you are taking contains codeine, which is a weak opiate and does indeed create a physical dependence in the user after prolonged use.

More worrying than the addiction, and in my humble opinion, much more in need of treatment, is what appears to be a chronic headache/pain which you are experiencing. Perhaps if you share more details about your lifestyle and your affliction, we could get to the root cause of this issue. I'm sure that one of the helpful people on this forum will have some experience and some advice to give.

Peace be with you.  ZZzz

yo, there are SO MANY herbs and natural vitamins that can replace synthetic ibuprofen.

For muscle relaxation, reducing anxiety, and improving mental stability - MAGNESIUM (I take magnesium citrate, it absorbs the best)

One of my favorite teas in the world is a combination of mainly ginger and turmeric. Ginger and turmeric are two extremely powerful anti-inflammatory spices that you can buy for super cheap at any grocery store!! Trader Joe's sells a box of bagged ginger turmeric tea for $2, but you can buy the straight spices in a bottle and make your own tea.

GINGER + TURMERIC eases stomach pain, headaches, depression, anxiety. Seriously, these spices are powerhouses.

...and to that wonderful combo you can add CINNAMON. According to this study, cinnamon was proven to be a powerful pain reliever for those with menstrual cramps. And it has no side effects!! Plus this spice also generates a feeling a warmth throughout the body in doses of around a tablespoon, relieving anxiety and boosting your mood.

I drink NETTLE TEA often. This stuff is an extremely powerful body purifier, relieving pain indirectly by cleansing the body of toxins and replenishing essential vitamins.

Also you could be deficient in essential vitamins! Do you take Vitamin C or Vitamin D? Those guys will boost your entire system noticeably if you start taking them daily.

One I have not tried, but the internet suggests could be good, is WHITE WILLOW BARK - University of Maryland seems to love this stuff. Another site referred to it as 'the original Aspirin.' Might be potential there.

Note that if you are by nature an anxious person, that may be the root cause of your pain and headaches, so perhaps try relaxation postures such as this one:

THIS POSE WORKS, I'm telling you, I've been in the middle of two day constant anxiety and I laid down for twenty minutes in that position and it was like the universe vacuumed up half the tension in my body.

Addiction to Ibuprofen huh?

I'm going to agree, let's pass up the effects and look at the cause.  So some effects to mark off as not causes are Ibuprofen psychological dependency (as they are not physically addictive but the changes they insight in the body can become mentally expected and thus 'addicted to' in the same way we'd miss someone after interaction with them daily for several weeks ceases, you miss the aspirin) and headaches, chronic pain, and insomnia all seem to be symptoms.

If we look back, could you say about when the pain and headaches began, and when you noticed you couldn't sleep without taking painkillers?

Could you also say how many and dosage of ibuprofen you take across the day?  If you're surpassing 500mg-1000mg daily then you are probably in need of weaning off to avoid a placebo withdrawal from stopping cold turkey.

I would strongly recommend you consider alternative forms of painkillers and perhaps seek out a mental health counselor or health professional who can help you discover the source of your chronic pain, your headaches, and if it's the pain keeping you awake or something deeper.

You sound like you have something psychological going on, but I only say this because I don't think the aspirin is the cause of your inability to sleep directly, and I don't think your pain is imaginary if it's bothering you enough to make you keep on taking aspirin.

Have you ever considered trying cannabis?  Real stuff, not synthetic or spice or whatever but real leafy smelly cannabis?  One Fourth of a gram would do good enough to someone without a high tolerance to weed.

Otherwise I would recommend a daily combination of meditation mixed with yoga (both are scientifically proven to increase a person's pain tolerance), and definitely try to get a medical opinion...

Because like, at the least it's psychological pain and treatable with some counseling, at the worst it's something like Fibromyalgia and might be in the beginning stages.  You should seek a medical opinion, any kind at all to give you some kind of direction.

And I mean a medical opinion from real doctors and practitioners and not us forum going spiritualists Wink

I second that, a nice dose of some healthy bud does your spirit so so much good. Opens up the pores of your soul, one might say

Do cinnamon helps to overcome the addiction? I think I should give it a try. Thank you for this informative post!!

I have researched about white willow bark and saw that they are similar to aspirin and is used as a pain-reliever. But will this help to overcome addiction?

Remember the famous heroine rat study where the rats would keep self dosing with heroine until they died? Well turns out that study had a critical flaw. In that study the rats were kept alone in boring cages. Of course they OD'd. When they re-ran the study but instead of rats alone they had a bunch of rats in a rat-paradise park. It turns out the rats didn't use the heroine much at all and never OD'd on it. (source: https://www.summitbehavioralhealth.com/blog/overview-rat-park-addiction-study/)

A similar study was done on opium addicts from Vietnam. A huge number of Vietnam soldiers were addicted to opium. But when these soldiers returned home from war very few of them stayed addicts. Most dropped the addiction cold turkey and never looked back.

Addiction is a sign that your life is unhealthy and unfulfilling. Change your environment and your life and you'll drop the addiction much more easily.
1. Work out
2. Get out in nature
3. Garden or care for a pet
4. Make it a priority to socialize especially with friends but if not with friends then literally with anyone. Just saying hello to someone significantly increases your mood.
5. Eat healthy
6. Meditate

Follow the above advice and rapidly your "rat-cage" is less of a cage and more of a paradise.

Anything that is healthier and that can replace the addictive substance you wish to stop using will help overcome addiction.

Of course you are attempting to replace a spiritual hole with a substance, which never works.

Maybe try meditation and/or yoga? Open up the energy channels in your brain and body and you'll eventually find the source of your addiction

RE: How to get rid of addiction? - Nicholas - 04-24-2017

Hi denise_chou,

As somebody who has a history of addiction I would first suggest that there is nothing to get rid of, or anything to overcome. Here is a short quote from Ra in session 18.5.

Quote:Overcoming thus creates the further environment for holding onto that which apparently has been overcome.

If you are anything like me then the first helpful thing to acknowledge is that your addiction is completely normal within the context of your own unique situation. Secondly is to affirm that talking therapy is a good idea (addiction counselling). In order to move on from any desire that we have, we first need to accept it, and then explore why the desire exists in the first place. Talking therapy is akin to the phrase "A problem shared is a problem halved". Talking about our problems to somebody does not solve them as such, but much like a healer does not properly heal another, by virtue of their non judgemental presence, cognizant or not, they provide an opening for us to process and understand our own motivations. The other half is entirely up to us.

Here is a Vancouver Doctor that I greatly admire  Smile

"Only when compassion is present will people allow themselves to see the truth"

I personally found ibuprofen to hard to stop using, maybe ten or so years ago.

I was taking it because it really helped me my mood as well as help me deal with lack of sleep. It decreased my anxiety. It smoothed out my emotions. It calmed me down. It also did all the usual things, such as taking away pain. I was taking it daily at one point for like 60 days straight. I decided to stop and never looked back.

If you can find a specialist who takes your addiction seriously, I think it's worth it to try to get counseling.

Thanks for all the replies!! I have started meditation and I hope deviating the mind might be a good strategy to deal with my addiction. Anyways, I will be going for a counseling on next week. Hope everything will be fine.
